The Federal TRIO ProgramsThe Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors, staff of TRIO projects and a dissemination partnership program to encourage the replication or adaptation of successful practices of TRIO projects at institutions and agencies that do not have TRIO grants. Saint Augustine’s College currently sponsors three TRIO programs: Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound are based 55 miles east of the institution in Rocky Mount, NC, while the Academic Achievers Program (Student Support Services) can be found housed on campus, on the second floor of the Boyer Building. |

Educational Talent Search
The second oldest of the Federal TRIO programs, the Educational Talent Search Project was instituted at Saint Augustine's College in 1970. The program is designed to serve qualified individuals in the sixth through twelfth grades who have the potential for education at the post-secondary level, including secondary and post-secondary dropouts in a target area consisting of eight rural counties in northeastern North Carolina. The target area demographics and statistical information indicates that the geographical area is probably one the most deprived areas in North Carolina.
The following northeastern North Carolina counties are served by ETS:
Edgecombe, Nash, Franklin, Northampton, Halifax, Warren, Martin, Vance
The Project identifies up to 1,150 students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds who, with appropriate counseling, knowledge, and motivation would be more successful in completing middle or junior high school, completing secondary school, and entering post-secondary education programs.
ETS focuses its activities and services on individuals in grades six through twelve with special emphasis on early initiative strategies for 250 middle and junior high students. Through a screening and selection process, eligible participants will be enrolled in the project and provided services determined by each participant's demonstrated needs.
Services provided by the program include:
- Academic, financial, career, or personal counseling including advice on entry or re-entry to secondary or postsecondary programs
- Career exploration and aptitude assessment

Upward Bound
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
Operating on a year round basis, the academic component consist of two Saturday sessions per month in which seven academic classes (Math, Science, English, Reading, Public Speaking, Spanish and Computer Skills) are offered. Additionally, a six-week residential summer component is offered where participants reside on the campus of Saint Augustine's College.
Upward Bound services include:
Our Program
Funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, the Academic Achievers Program is a Federal TRIO Program which was established here at Saint Augustine's College in 1978. As a Student Support Services program, the goal of the Academic Achievers Program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its eligible students from entry into college through graduation. The initial emphasis is on helping the first year and new student make a successful transition from one level of higher education to the next. At the same time opportunities for academic development and assistance with basic college requirements are provided to all eligible students as well.
The Academic Achievers Program offers the following services to its participants: counseling, tutorial assistance, academic advisement, mentoring, cultural enrichment activities, classes, and services. All are provided at no cost, and designed to complement and improve students' academic learning experiences and performances.
Students who have an interest in the program will undergo a screening and selection process which involves meeting certain requirements for program eligibility. Students who meet specific family income levels and are first generation, and/or disabled students may be eligible and enrolled as a participant in the Academic Achievers Program.
